Profile : A P McCoy

Anthony Peter McCoy is a horseracing jockey who many people believe to be the best National Hunt jockey of all time. Born on 4 May 1974 at Moneyglass, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland he has gone on to saddle over 3000 winners in a career which many believe we will never see the likes of again. Since his first win on “Legal Steps” on 26 March 1992 he has travelled the world racking up substantial wins in every area of horseracing.

There are many records which Tony McCoy has created which include 74 winners in his first year of racing in England, a record 253 National Hunt winners in one year, quickest jockey to reach 1000 winners as well as a record 289 winners in one year in all types of horseracing, which climaxed in April 2002. McCoy has been champion jockey in the 1995/96 season, 1996/7, 1997/8, 1998/9, 1999/2000, 2000/1, 2001/2, 2002/3, 2003/4, 2004/5, 2005/6, 2006/7, 2007/8 and possibly 2008/9?

The fact that McCoy is only 34 years of age could well see him race for a number of years yet with many expecting his 3000 winners to move up to 4000 before he hangs up his jockey’s cap. It’s true to say we are unlikely to see the likes of Tony McCoy ever again as the quiet man of racing has dominated the sport for many years.
