Could Russian Ban Push People Towards Online Casinos?

Russia
The Russian government officially closed all casinos  in the country on Wednesday and already there has been a backlash from gamblers. With millions of people being without local casinos, online casinos may become the major beneficiary.

Although online gambling was included as part of the ban, Russians are still hoping that they will be able to find some form of casinos online. The ban imposed in Russia has been in the works for several years now.

“The US government made a similar attempt to stop their residents from gambling online, and it has failed miserably,” said observer Terrence McCoy, “you would think the rest of the world would have taken notice of the failure, but in Russia they have not.”

The government had been receiving pressure from the elderly to move casinos out of the main cities. The new law calls for casinos to be built only in four approved zones on the outskirts of Russia.

Casino owners have claimed that they will not relocate their businesses. They are unwilling to invest the money it will take to move their casinos, and they do not feel that the zones approved will bring enough revenue to justify the cost.

Online casinos may end up being the only way out for Russians. There is also a fear that the government, through this new law, will drive casino gambling underground, where illegal operations will benefit from gamblers who want action.
